My Story
I grew up in a household that fostered and adopted many children. I had the unique opportunity to witness the impact my family had on those kids, when they were welcomed into our home and given a chance. When it was time to sit down and decide what I wanted to do with my life, I knew I wanted to help people. I wanted to do my part to make a difference. So, I went to school and got my bachelor's in criminal justice, thinking maybe a military or police career may be a good option. I moved around after getting my degree and struggled to find work that seemed to fit with my path. I wanted to help people, but I didn't want to engage in violence or aggression. One day in Texas, sitting on a tractor in a field, it hit me. Instead of a career in punitive action, I would pursue a career of progressive action. Helping others down a road of positivity. I realized my purpose would be much better served in a mental health career. So, I went on to graduate with a master's degree in social work.
Now, after ten years in the field, I find this to be an extremely rewarding career. I find the connections I make with my clients to be fulfilling in the way that I can make a difference in their life. I aim to understand each individual on a deeper level than what is presented to the world. Then, we can work together to set and achieve goals, building toward an improved life experience.
I really enjoy the aha moments. That moment in session where I can see everything coming together for my client. That realization is such a rewarding moment. I enjoy working with people of all cultures, backgrounds and identities. That being said, I find that working with the younger population brings me the most joy. I feel that teenagers and young adults are often dismissed because of their age. They are often judged for their decisions and punished without being given a chance to express themselves. I find that younger people often times, just need to be heard. They need someone to listen to them and hear them out. I offer validation and challenges where appropriate, to encourage opportunities for personal growth. Everyone deserves that chance regardless of age or life experience. I know, through the work I do with the younger population, I'm helping them improve their chances to succeed for a better life, early on. I find this to be incredibly rewarding.
In todays world it is much too easy for young adults and teens to find themselves on a negative path or on the wrong side of the law. Always fighting with their parents and rebelling against authority figures. I have experience working with teens and young adults coming from disadvantaged neighborhoods.
I've worked in residential treatment with young men who thought they were out of options. Many of them had resorted to a life of crime, destined for a detention center. Working with them, to help them to discover that the world has more options and paths available for them. I also work with those in pre-trial intervention, court mandated therapy, probation and parole. I believe everyone deserves a chance to improve their mental health.
I strive to do my part in helping the next generation thrive in world of mental wellness.
